T8AMINIK RANKIN
Elder T8aminik (Dominique) Rankin was born in the forests of northwestern Quebec, when his parents were still living the nomadic lifestyle of their Anicinapek (Algonquin) ancestors. At the age of 7 yo, he was appointed by the elders to one day take over from his father as hereditary chief. From childhood, he was therefore placed on a long path of learning and initiations which, 50 years later, would lead to his full and complete recognition as an elder and a medicine man. Grandfather T8aminik was also confronted with the terrible era of Indian Residential Schools. It is the philosophy and the traditional medicine of his family that allowed him to get back on his feet.
MARIE-JOSÉE TARDIF
During the first 15 years of her professional life, Marie-Josée (or Marijo) made a name for herself as a journalist and news anchor for major television and radio stations in Quebec, Canada and Great Britain. In 2007, her life changed dramatically: the elders of the Algonquin nation offered her the opportunity to embark on a long journey of learning their traditional medicine, which she accepted after careful consideration. This is why Marie-Josée, who is now called Kokom (grandmother), regularly teaches alongside T8aminik, both nationally and internationally.
